  • Sheppard Avenue Road Reconstruction | Shelley Carroll

Sheppard Avenue Road Reconstruction Sheppard Avenue East is in need of road resurfacing and reconstruction due to the poor condition of the road. In Toronto, roads are resurfaced every 25 to 35 years and reconstructed every 50-100 years, presenting a unique once-in-a-generation opportunity for the City to improve the design of the street with consideration to updated policies and design guidelines, as well as future needs of the community. The following changes are planned along Sheppard Avenue East from Bayview Avenue to Leslie Street: Reallocation of some vehicular lanes and narrowed lane widths to improve safety. Intersection improvements, including protected intersection elements at signalized intersections. Widened sidewalks and enhanced crossings to improve the experience of people walking and to ensure compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). New transit stop features, including accessible bus stops, new transit shelters and seating areas. Raised uni-directional (one-way) cycle tracks on the north and south side of the road. New plantings and green infrastructure. Thank you to everyone in the community who has taken the time to share their feedback on the proposed plan for the road reconstruction on Sheppard Avenue. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin this year. We will share more updates on this website as they become available. • Cummer Avenue Reconstruction | Shelley Carroll

Cummer Avenue Reconstruction The City of Toronto has completed infrastructure improvements on Cummer Avenue in Don Valley North. The infrastructure improvements were completed as part of a scheduled road reconstruction with the goal of improving traffic safety and enhancing the overall experience for people taking all modes of transportation on Cummer Avenue. Cummer Avenue was selected for reconstruction based on a number of factors, including a history of dangerous speeding. On Cummer Avenue between Bayview Avenue and Leslie Street, speed studies showed that people were consistently driving above the posted speed limit. Speeding poses a risk to the safety of all road users. From 2015 to 2019, 231 vehicle collisions occurred on Cummer Avenue. Two of those collisions resulted in serious injury and one resulted in a fatality. The project included: Rehabilitating the north side of the bridge over the Don River, including reconstruction of the concrete deck, sidewalk and parapet walls with railings; replacement of bridge bearings and asphalt surface with bridge waterproofing; and patch repair of piers, abutments and wingwalls. Road reconstruction between Craigmont Drive and Leslie Street, including substandard water service replacements, cycle track construction and intersection safety modifications from Pineway Boulevard. Widening sidewalks, along with the addition of new street trees, grass plantings, and other green infrastructure features. For more information, visit the link below: Learn More

  • Marowyne-Glentworth Traffic Safety | Shelley Carroll

Marowyne-Glentworth Traffic Safety Improvements Last year, Interim Geometric Safety Improvements (IGSI) were installed at the intersection of Marowyne Dr & Glentworth Rd. These changes are intended to reduce the speed at which cars make turns at this intersection and put an end to rolling stops, making it safer for all road users. This location was selected after several local residents expressed concern with the speed at which cars were travelling around this bend. These are "interim" changes that are intended to stay in place until construction can take place to make permanent changes to the intersection. As these are interim changes , City staff will continue to observe and evaluate the effectiveness of these measures. Please feel free to share any feedback on these changes with the Vision Zero team at VisionZeroTO@toronto.ca to help inform the permanent changes that will eventually be made here. HISTORY Previous to the IG SI installation, the intersection looked like this: As shown above, the southwest corner of the intersection has a very large curve. This curve encouraged drivers to take turns at high speeds, which made the intersection less safe for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Quick-Build Safety Improvements The following Quick-Build Safety Improvements (QBSI) were implemented at Glentworth & Marowyne to address the above issues: Curb radii reductions / curb extensions to encourage drivers to turn at a slower speed. Normalizing the approach of Glentworth Road to Marowyne Drive to as close to 90 degrees as possible, allowing drivers better sightlines and reducing blind spots. Removing excess pavement area to reduce the crossing distance and exposure to traffic, for both pedestrians and cyclists. More details are shown in the presentation below: Frequently Asked Questions How are these designed, and how does the City ensure the road is still safe for cars? Why are temporary materials used? Are these changes permanent? Will this make traffic worse? Designs are completed per the City's Engineering Guidelines, and aim to improve safety for all road users. Changes to intersection geometrics are tested using computer-aided drafting tools in order to ensure that all vehicles can be safely accommodated. The safety improvements are delivered using quick-build materials like paint, signs, and plastic bollards in order to achieve safety improvements more rapidly in areas where larger capital works are not currently planned. City staff understand that residents might not enjoy the aesthetics of the chosen materials. However, the use of quick-build materials allows staff to implement the safety improvements quickly and make sure it works for the neighbourhood before making the changes permament. These changes are considered "interim". They are intended to remain in place until construction can be scheduled to make permanent improvements to the intersection. Typically, permanent measures are installed in conjunction with road resurfacing. Generally, with projects like this, drivers become familiar with the new roadway after a short adjustment period and are able to navigate the intersection safely and at appropriate speeds.
